Getting to Know Nina Kwande: Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your journey in the fashion industry?
I’m an entrepreneur, educator, and coach with a passion for fashion. I founded The Fashion Academy Abuja to equip aspiring designers with the skills and confidence to succeed in the industry. My journey in fashion began when I realized that clothes were being made poorly in Nigeria, and I wanted to change that by creating high-quality garments and teaching others how to do the same.

What inspired you to start The Fashion Academy, and what were some of the challenges you faced in the early days?
I founded The Fashion Academy out of a desire to teach people how to make clothes properly in Nigeria. One major challenge was getting people to understand that fashion is a serious profession that requires dedication and technical skills. However, seeing our students thrive and build successful businesses has made every challenge worthwhile.

How do you balance your roles as a fashion entrepreneur and educator?
It’s about creating structures that allow both sides to function independently. Initially, I had to take a backseat in one area to give the other more focus. Now, by building strong systems within the Academy, I’ve been able to create a balance that allows me to focus on my personal brand and still give time to my personal life.

How do you incorporate elements of your Nigerian heritage into your designs?
I focus on simplicity in my designs and don’t directly reference culture. I believe in creating pieces that allow you to represent who you are. Culture can be reflected through styling and accessories with my designs.

What kind of courses does The Fashion Academy offer?
We offer short courses ranging from two weeks to one year, focusing on apparel/clothing production and its processes. We also have supporting courses that help students start or grow their businesses.

The industry has grown significantly, with increasing global recognition and appreciation for African craftsmanship and creativity. Future trends will focus on sustainability, digital innovation, and cultural heritage.
